Aacenocoumarol and warfarin [
W0005], coumarin derivatives, are vitamin K antagonists. They exhibit their anticoagulant effect by inhibition of vitamin K epoxide reductase. They also interfere with the production of vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors II, VII, IX, and X and proteins C and S. They reduce blood clotting by reducing the action of vitamin K. Acenocoumarol is used as an oral anticoagulant prescribed for the treatment of a variety of thromboembolic disorders such as atrial fibrillation and thrombosis or embolism.
