Application
Lidocaine: A Voltage Gated Sodium Channel Blocker
Lidocaine is widely used for regional anesthesia and postoperative pain relief, and these effects involve the blockade of voltage-dependent sodium channels which play a key role in the pathogenesis of neuropathic pain. Thus, lidocaine stabilizes the neuronal cell membrane by inhibiting the movement of sodium ions into a nerve cell. Lignocaine is also a class IB antiarrhythmic agent as a sodium channel blocker. Lidocaine is metabolized rapidly by CYP1A2 and CYP3A4 in liver to main active metabolites, monoethylglycine xylidide (MEGX) [N1171] and glycinexylidide (GX) [G0579].
