Application
Tecovirimat: An Antiviral Agent against Smallpox and Mpox
Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) is caused by the Mpox virus (MpoxV), which is an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus of the poxiviridae family and the genus Orthopoxvirus (OPV). Tecovirimat has potent antiviral activity against smallpox and Mpox.1-3) It inhibits the activity of the mature virus vp37 protein, which is essential for forming the extracellular enveloped virus upon cell lysis. Consequently, tecovirimat has been demonstrated to inhibit the production of the extracellular virus, thereby reducing the transmission of virus to distant sites. For your reference, anti-Mpox agents with different mechanisms of action have been reported.1,4) (The product is for research use only.)
