Sulfisoxazole: A Sulfonamide Antimicrobial

Sulfisoxazole is a sulfonamide antimicrobial which inhibits bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolic acid (DHF) which is needed to make both purines and pyrimidines, are constituents of DNA and RNA. Sulfonamide antimicrobials structurally resemble 4-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)[A0269], a precursor in bacterial DHF synthesis. Therefore, sulfonamide antimicrobials completely inhibit utilization of PABA and synthesis of DHF, and they possess bacteriostatic activity against a broad spectrum of pathogens. Recently, some new antimicrobials bearing sulfisoxazole moiety have been reported.
