Rabeprazole sodium is a new substituted benzimidazole proton pump inhibitor with several differences compared with existing proton pump inhibitors. Rabeprazole sodium is a more potent inhibitor of H
+,K
+-ATPase (hydrogen-potassium adenosine triphosphatase) and acid secretion than omeprazole [
O0359], and is a more rapid inhibitor of proton pumps than omeprazole, lansoprazole [
L0233], or pantoprazole sulfide [
P2066]. Furthermore,
in vitro studies have shown that rabeprazole sodium possesses more potent antibacterial properties against the growth of
H. pylori than other proton pump inhibitors.
