Sultamicillin tosylate is a double ester mutual prodrug in which ampicillin [
A2092] and the β-lactamase inhibitor sulbactam [
S0868] are linked via a methylene group. Sultamicillin is readily absorbed and hydrolyzed by enzymes in the intestinal wall, releasing ampicillin and sulbactam. Ampicillin is an aminopenicillin which exerts its bactericidal activity by inhibiting transpeptidase, an enzyme responsible for the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer of the bacterial cell wall. Sulbactam is an irreversible inhibitor of many plasmid-mediated and some chromosomal β-lactamases, produced by resistant bacteria. Therefore, sultamicillin is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including
Staphylococcus aureus and
Staphylococcus epidermidis, including penicillin-resistant and some methicillin-resistant strains. (The product is for research purpose only.)
