6PPD-Quinone for Urban Wastewater and Environmental Toxicity Studies

6PPD-quinone is an environmental toxicant formed when 6PPD, an antioxidant widely used in automobile tires in urban areas, undergoes oxidation in the environment. It has been identified as acutely lethal to coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch).¹⁾ Recent studies have reported that even low concentrations of 6PPD-quinone in urban runoff can cause sudden death in salmon,^2,3) drawing significant attention in the fields of urban runoff impact assessment and ecotoxicological studies. Long-term risks, such as potential effects on non-target organisms through the food chain, are also of concern.
