Hydrochlorothiazide: A Thiazide Diuretic

Hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic, affects the renal tubular mechanisms of electrolyte reabsorption, directly increasing excretion of sodium and chloride in approximately molecular equivalent amounts. Although the mechanism of the antihypertensive effect remains unknown exactly, thiazide diuretics are often used with AT1 receptor antagonists, especially valsartan [V0112], in clinical use.
