Piperine: A Natural Piperidine Alkaloid with TRPV1 Activation Ability

Piperine is a natural piperidine alkaloid responsible for the pungency of black pepper. It has been used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases. The pungency results from activation of the heat- and acidity-sensing TRPV1 ion channels, also known as the capsaicin receptor.1,2) In addition, piperine inhibits P-glycoprotein and/or CYP3A4 which are responsible for the metabolism and transport of xenobiotics and metabolites in the body.3,4) Therefore, piperine has potential to increase bioavailability of other compounds in food and dietary supplements, such as curcumin [C0434][C2302].4,5) (The product is for research purpose only.)
