Cefotaxime sodium salt is a third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic, which is chemically synthesized form 7-aminocephalosporanic acid (7-ACA) [
A1266]. It has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, and is generally more active against Gram-negative bacteria than the first and second generation cephalosporins. It has increased stability to β-lactamases compared with the first and second generation cephalosporins. Furthermore, it penetrates well into various body compartments. Recently, it has been reported it as a corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in hydrochloric acid solution.
