Application
Deferiprone: A Potent Chelating Agent with an Affinity for Ferric Ion [Fe (III)]

Deferiprone is a potent chelating agent with an affinity for ferric ion [Fe (III)]. Reportedly, deferiprone binds with ferric ions to form neutral 3:1 (deferiprone:iron) complexes that are stable over a wide range of pH values. And then, deferiprone has a lower binding affinity for other metals such as copper, aluminum and zinc than for iron. Deferiprone, an iron chelator that may cross the blood-brain barrier, is used therapeutically in conditions of transfusional iron overload and Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA) for the excretion of iron.
