Application
Acadesine (AICAR): AMP-Activated Protein Kinase Activator
5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide 1-β-D-ribofuranoside (Acadesine or AICAR) has been extensively used in vitro and in vivo to activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK stimulates energy production via glucose and lipid metabolism, whereas it inhibits energy consuming functions, such as protein and cholesterol synthesis. Therefore, acadesine may have applications in treating disorders such as type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. Recently, it has been shown that acadesine induces leukemia apoptosis.
