Gossypol Acetic Acid: A Polyphenolic Compound with Anti-Tumor, Anti-Viral, and Anti-Spermatogenic Properties

Gossypol acetic acid (gossypol) is a polyphenolic compound found in the cotton plant (genus Gossypium).1-4) Gossypol is of medical interest because of its anti-tumor,1,4) anti-viral,2) and anti-spermatogenic3) properties. Because of the restricted rotation of the two naphthyl moieties, which are connected via a C-C bond, gossypol exists as (+) and (-) enantiomers, in spite of the absence of an asymmetric carbon.2) Biological studies shows that the (-) enantiomer of gossypol was more active than the (+) form.1,2) The (-) enantiomer, named AT-101, is expected to be a new antitumor agent.5,6) (The product is for research purpose only.)
