Application
Posaconazole: An Triazole Antifungal Agent with Broad-Spectrum Activity
Posaconazole (SCH 56592), an triazole antifungal agent with broad-spectrum activity, appears to inhibit ergosterol synthesis of fungi by inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14 α-demethylase. Inhibition of this enzyme’s activity by posaconazole results in decreased amounts of ergosterol, a constituent of fungal cell membranes. Especially, posaconazole has broader spectrum of activity than other available antifungals. Posaconazole has even activity against Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans refractory to other triazole antifungal agents, such as itraconazole [I0732] or fluconazole [F0677].
