Sulfapyridine (or sulphapyridine) is a synthetic sulfonamide antimicrobial with a wide spectrum against most gram-positive and many gram-negative organisms. Sulfapyridine, as well as other sulfonamides, inhibits the bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase and multiplication of bacteria by acting as competitive inhibitors of 4-aminobenzoic acid in the folic acid metabolism cycle. Its water solubility is pH and co-solvent dependent. Meanwhile, sulfapyridine and 5-aminosalicylic acid [
A0317] are known as the bacterial metabolites of sulfasalazine (sulphasalazine) [
S0580]. (The product is for research purpose only.)
