Oxytetracycline hydrochloride belongs to a general class of antibiotics known as tetracyclines, such as doxycycline [D4116], minocycline [M2288] and tetracycline [T2525]. Oxytetracycline was first found in a soil sample yielding Streptomyces sp. in 1950. It is active against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive organisms, as well as protozoa organisms. Oxytetracycline is primarily bacteriostatic and is thought to exert its antimicrobial effect by the inhibition of protein synthesis. (The product is for research purpose only.)
