Application
Zolmitriptan: A Selective 5-HT1B/1D Receptor Agonist
Zolmitriptan is a selective 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist, belongs to triptans. Zolmitriptan binds with high affinity to 5-HT1 receptor subtypes (5-HT1B, 5-HT1D), and moderate affinity for a serotonergic receptor subtype (5-HT1A). Zolmitriptan is mainly metabolized by CYP1A2 to an initial metabolite N-desmethylzolmitriptan which also has high affinity for 5-HT1B/1D and moderate affinity for 5-HT1A receptors. Animal studies shows that zolmitriptan presumably exerts its therapeutic effects in the treatment of migraine headache through agonist effects at the 5-HT1B/1D receptors on intracranial blood vessels and sensory nerves of the trigeminal system.
