Rufinamide: A Broad-Spectrum Anticonvulsant Agent
Rufinamide is an antiepileptic agent with a triazole derivative structure. It is showed broad-spectrum anticonvulsant properties at nontoxic doses in animal models. The principal mechanism of action of rufinamide is considered to be the modulation of the activity of sodium channels and, in particular, prolongation of the inactive state of the channel. Rufinamide is extensively metabolized in the liver by non-CYP450 enzymes. Recently, rufinamide is in development for the adjunctive treatment of refractory epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS).
