Fluoxetine Hydrochloride: A Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) with a Long-Half Life

Fluoxetine hydrochloride is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). SSRIs do not blockade of acetylcholine or norepinephrine receptors. Therefore, blockade of reuptake is confined to serotonin (5-HT) [S0370] of central nervous system neurons. Although the exact mechanism is unknown, SSRIs are a widely used type of antidepressant medication. Fluoxetine has a long duration of action since the N-demethylated metabolite (norfluoxetine [CAS: 83891-03-6]) is also active.
In general, SSRIs possess a protonatable nitrogen atom and simple aromatic moisture, instead of a larger aromatic ring system. Besides fluoxetine, SSRIs includes citalopram hydrobromide [C2370], (S)-citalopram oxalate [E0958], sertraline hydrochloride [S0507] paroxetine hydrochloride [P1977] and a few other agents. (The product is for research purpose only.)
