Application
Bilirubin: The End Product of Heme Catabolism with Interesting Biochemical and Biological Properties
Bilirubin, the principal bile pigment, is the end product of heme catabolism, formed when heme is cleaved by heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). HO-1 catabolizes heme into three products: biliverdin (which is rapidly converted to bilirubin by biliverdin reductase), carbon monoxide (CO) and free iron ion (Fe3+). For many years, bilirubin was thought as a waste product with no physiological function. But recently, HO-1 has been recognized to have immunomodulatory, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.1,2) And then, bilirubin has also been recognized to have a number of new and interesting biochemical and biological properties.3,4) (The product is for research purpose only.)
