Straightforward Aryne Polymerization: Synthesis of Poly(ortho -arylene)s
Typical Procedure: Dried CsF (302.5 mg, 1.99 mmol), dry THF (12 mL), 4,5-dimethoxy-2-(trimethylsilyl)phenyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (363.5 mg, 1.01 mmol) and 18-crown-6 ether (1.023 mg, 3.87 mmol) are added to a dried Schlenk flask under argon. A solution of CuCN (1 mg, 1.1 mol%) in dry THF (6 mL) is added to this mixture. The mixture is stirred at room temperature for 21.5 h. The reaction is quenched with saturated aqueous NH4Cl and extracted with chloroform. The collected organic layer is washed with water, dried over anhydrous MgSO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is purified with preparative HPLC (eluent: CHCl3) to give the corresponding poly(ortho -arylene) as a pale yellow solid in 75% yield (101.9 mg). Gel permeation chromatography (eluent: THF) Mn = 5120 g/mol, Mw = 10520 g/mol, Mw /Mn = 2.05.
