Application
5α-Pregnane-3,20-dione (5α-DHP): An Endogenous Neurosteroid
5α-Pregnane-3,20-dione (5α-DHP) is an endogenous progestogen and neurosteroid that is synthesized from progesterone [P0478] in the central and peripheral nervous system. 5α-DHP is also actively metabolized into neuroactive steroid metabolites, such as allopregnanolone and isopregnanolone. In addition, 5α-DHP is reported to act as a potent positive allosteric modulator of the action of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABAA receptor.
