To a solution of 3-amino-3-phenylpropionic acid (463 mg, 2.80 mmol) and triphenylphosphine (881 mg, 3.36 mmol) in acetonitrile (28 mL) was added 2,2'-dipyridyl disulfide (740 mg, 3.36 mmol) and the mixture was stirred at reflux for 3 hours. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by column chromatography (1:1 diethyl ether / dichloromethane on SiO2), giving white solid (250 mg, 56%).

- (1) The reaction mixture was monitored by TLC (Et2O / CH2Cl2 = 1 : 1, Rf = 0.35).
- (2) This condition is also utilized in the Corey-Nicolaou macrolactonization.
