Chemical Synthesis of the Glycosaminoglycans

Glycosaminoglycans (GAG) are large molecule polysaccharides (molecular weight: roughly 10,000 - 2 million) constructed with a number of disaccharide repeating units consisting of a uronic acid (-glucuronic acid or -iduronic acid) and a hexosamine (N-acetylgalactosamine or N-acetylglucosamine). Most of the GAG sugar chains have sulfate groups. The number of repeating units and sulfate groups plays an important role for the biological activities of GAG. It is actually known that various functions of life phenomena are promoted by gaining a diversity of structure through GAG.
Since TCI has advanced, proprietary technology for synthesis of a wide range of sugar chains, it is possible to synthesize GAG having sulfate groups at a desired position and being composed of required sugar residues with high purity and large scale. Anti-Glycosaminoglycan Antibodies

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is an essential element for higher organisms to form cells, tissues, and organs; to control cell-cell connections and functions. The ECM also greatly affects several biological phe- nomena (such as development, aging, inflammation, wound healing, and immunity). Glycosaminoglycans (GAG), such as chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid and keratan sulfate, are major components of the ECM and play an important role. Analysis of glycosaminoglycans is very difficult, especially when performing in situ analysis of cells and tissues. Thus, antibodies are particularly important as a detection tool.
