Catechol-containing Methacrylate Monomer for the Development of Biomimetic Materials

3,4-Dihydroxyphenethyl methacrylate (1) is a monomer used for synthesizing biomimetic materials. Mussels adhere to rocks and other surfaces in the sea using a catechol-containing protein called mussel adhesive protein.1) Numerous adhesives that mimic the function of mussel adhesive protein have been reported, targeting medical and underwater applications.2) N-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenethyl)methacrylamide (2) has been used to introduce the catechol moiety in their synthesis. 1 is an analog of 2 containing a catechol moiety, yet it has been scarcely utilized. The adhesive using 1 exhibit bonding strength comparable to those using 2.3) Furthermore, since 1 possesses ester bonds, improved biodegradability can be expected.
