Application
Fosfomycin: A Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic with Inactivating UDP-N-Acetylglucosamine-3-enolpyruvyl Transferase (MurA)
Fosfomycin (also known as phosphomycin), a broad-spectrum antibiotic, was isolated from Streptomyces fradiase in 1969. It can now be made by chemical synthesis. Fosfomycin has bactericidal activity against a wide range of bacteria, including Gram-negative micro-organisms and some Gram-positive bacteria, such as staphylococci. Fosfomycin interferes with cell wall synthesis in bacteria by inhibiting the initial step by inactivating UDP-N-acetylglucosamine-3-enolpyruvyl transferase, also known as MurA.
