Application
Methylnaltrexone Bromide: A Selective μ-Opioid Receptor Antagonist
Methylnaltrexone bromide is a selective antagonist of opioid binding at the μ-opioid receptor, a quaternary derivative of naltrexone [N1176]. As a quaternary amine, methylnaltrexone bromide has greater polarity and lower lipid solubility; therefore, it does not cross the blood-brain barrier.1,2) This allows methylnaltrexone bromide to act as a peripherally-acting μ-opioid receptor antagonist in tissues such as the gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing the constipating effects of opioids without interfering with opioid-mediated analgesic effects on the central nervous system.3) (The product is for research purpose only.)
