Focusing on the Elements - Elements for the Fight against Cancer

Kentaro Sato
The twentieth century saw an extraordinary extension of human life in industrialized countries. For example, the Japanese average longevity was around 44 years in 1900 and improved to over 80 years by 2000. The centenarian population was only 198 in 1965, but surpassed the 10,000 mark in 1998 and is now over 50,000 in 2012. In the next few decades, there may come a time when it isn’t rare to live longer than 100 years.

Asymmetric Iodolactonization Using a Trinuclear Zinc Complex Prepared from Bisaminoiminobinaphthol Ligand

Arai et al. have reported an asymmetric iodolactonization using a ligand having a BINOL group and two chiral aminoimino groups, such as (R)-3,3'-Bis[[[(1R,2R)-2-(isoindolin-2-yl)-1,2-diphenylethyl]imino]methyl]-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (1). In this reaction, the equivalent-relation between 1 and metal salts is important to promote the reaction effectively. The reaction successfully proceeds in high yield and high enantioselectivity when using three equivalents of zinc acetate relative to the equivalent of 1. Furthermore, the X-ray analysis of the prepared zinc-complex coordinates with 1 has been determined and has clarified its structure forms a trinuclear zinc complex.

A Brønsted Organic Acid Forming Solid State Salts with Chemically Stable Cationic Species

1,2-Benzenedisulfonic imide(1) is a strong Brønsted organic acid and is used for acid-catalyzed organic synthesis.1-3) For instance, 1 catalyzed acylations of alcohols with acid anhydrides can be performed under solvent-free conditions.3) After this reaction, the catalyst 1 can be recovered and reused. On the other hand, 1 can form ion-pairs with chemically stable cationic species. Barbero et al. successfully isolated cationic intermediates as solid state salts consisting of a conjugate base of 1, by the condensation reaction of aromatic aldehydes with benzimidazole derivatives under the presence of 1 to give the cationic intermediates.4) Isolated salt crystals are determined by X-ray analysis to clarify the structure of cationic intermediate.
