As a research assistant at National Tsin-Hua University, fascinated by the colorful nature of organometallic compounds, I was involved in metal cluster organometallic chemistry and then I found that the beauty of the molecular structures of metal cluster compounds impressed me more. 'Chemistry is an art' has then seeded in my early career of research. As chemistry being recognized as a structurally based science, designs of molecular structures have always attracted me initially to get through the resulting beautiful science behind these beautiful molecules.

Direct Synthesis of N-Unprotected Aziridines from Olefins Using a Rhodium Catalyst

Falck et al. have reported the direct synthesis of N-unprotected aziridines from olefins. According to their results, various olefins can be converted into the corresponding N-unsubstituted aziridines in high yields and stereospecifically by the treatment of a hydroxylamine (1) and a catalytic amount of Rh2(esp)2. Conventionally, aziridinations of olefins require amines having an electron-withdrawing protecting group and in some cases side reactions occur. To obtain the N-free aziridines, a sequential deprotection is performed. Aziridine moieties can be found in natural products such as azinomycins and can be regarded as significant building blocks. Thus, this reaction is expected to be applied for the direct synthesis of the N-unsubstituted aziridines from olefins.

Antitumor Compound present in a Tree of Africa

Combretastatin A4 (CA4) is an antitumor compound isolated from the African bush willow tree (Combretum caffrum).1) CA4 binds to tubulin dimers and inhibits microtubule polymerization, thereby inducing mitotic arrest and apoptosis in endothelial cells.1,2) Combretastatin A4 phosphate disodium salt (CA4P), a water-soluble prodrug of CA4, is converted to CA4 by metabolism.3) It has been reported that CA4P has significant effects on tumor vascularization by disrupting vascular endothelial cadherin.4,5) Recently CA4 was also extracted from Brazilian Combretaceae family plant (Combretum leprosum).6) And various CA4 analogs have been synthesized and evaluated for antitumor activity.7,8)
