[Featured Products] Living Radical Polymerization Reagents

Living radical polymerization is the effective precise polymerization method for high-value added polymers. Recently, a new type of living radical polymerization method that uses organic molecules as catalyst and initiator has been developed. By using this method, polymers with a narrow molecular weight distribution can be synthesized under metal-free condition. This method is expected applied development of the future.

Asymmetric Tandem Michael Addition/Oxidation of Pyrazolones with p-Benzoquinone Using Cinchona Alkaloid Catalysts

Wang et al. have reported the cinchona alkaloid catalysts-promoted asymmetric tandem Michael addition/oxidation of pyrazolones with p-benzoquinone. According to their results, a cinchona alkaloid catalyst of quinine is effective for the reaction to proceed and a wide range of 4,4-disubstituted pyrazol-5-ones are formed with high yields and enantioselectivities. Since pyrazolones are an important class of structural motifs found in a diverse range of biologically active compounds such as antibacterials, this synthetic approach is expected to be applied in the field of drug development.

Curcumin Analogs with Enhanced Antitumor Activities

Turmeric containing curcumin, a yellow dye, has been used as a South Asian traditional medicine for hepatobiliary disorders, inflammation, and wound healing. Curcumin has anti-proliferative, cancer-chemopreventive, anti-angiogenic, and anti-oxidant effects. However, its low bioavailability causes limitations of its application to chemotherapy.
GO-Y030 and GO-Y078 are synthetic analogs of curcumin, developed by Shibata, Iwabuchi et al. to increase the antitumor potential and improve the bioavailability.2,3) The assays on various cancer cell lines revealed that GO-Y030 and GO-Y078 suppress tumor cell growth and control the growth-related molecules such as NF- κB, β-catenin, STAT3, c-Myc and IRF-4.4,5) It has been reported that they inhibit in vivo cancer cell growth in a mouse model of gastric cancer and GO-Y078 having a twice higher water-solubility than curcumin is even more effective.5)
