Product]Glyco-enhancer of Plant Fertilization: AMOR
plants, "pollen tube attractants" are essential
for the pollen tube to reach the ovule. It has been
hypothesized that the pistil secretes various activators to
render the pollen tube fertile. Prof. Higashiyama and Dr.
Mizukami at ITbM (Institute of Transformative
Bio-Molecules, Nagoya University) and their colleagues have
recently discovered a sugar chain "AMOR" named as
an attractant. AMOR features the sugar chain
arabinogalactan which is uniquely found in plant cell
walls, and is important in the plant cell-to-cell
a natural vitamin which binds tightly to the protein
avidin. Since biotin-avidin binding is well-known as one of
the strongest protein-ligand interactions, biotin and
avidin are used in various biochemical applications. TCI

Difluoromethylating Agent for Catalytic Difluoromethylation
Difluoromethyl 2-pyridyl sulfone (1),
which is composed of pyridyl and difluoromethylsulfonyl
groups, performs as a difluoromethylating reagent when used
with metal catalysts. For example, Hu etal.
have reported that 1 reacts with aryl zinc reagents
(2) in the presence of tris(2,4-pentanedionato)iron(III) and tetramethylenediamine (TMEDA) giving the
corresponding difluoromethylated aryl products in good
yields. This reaction can be applied to various aryl group
substituted zinc compounds such as a phenyl group and
others like methoxy-, trifluoromethyl-, or
heteroaryl-substituted aryl groups. In this way, 1
is expected to be used directly as a difluoromethylating
reagent introducing a difluoromethyl group into aryl
YD2: A Green Porphyrin Dye for Dye-sensitized Solar Cells
YD2 is a green zinc-centered porphyrin dye
used as a sensitizer for dye-sensitized solar cells
(DSSCs).1) Although ruthenium-based dyes such as
N719 dye and N749 black dye are well known as efficient
sensitizers, ruthenium-free sensitizers including porphyrin
dyes have also been developed as they do not need to
contain any noble metals, which can reduce material cost.
YD2 is a promising materials whose power conversion
efficiencies attain up to 11% in a device including
reflecting particles, and 8.8% in a device without the
reflecting layer.2) The material shows a wide
bathochromic-shifted Soret band and Q band due to its
electron-donating diphenylamino moiety, and an
electron-withdrawing carboxyphenylethynyl at the meso-positions
of the porphyrin ring.
