The extracellular matrix (ECM) is an essential element for higher organisms to form cells, tissues, organs, and to control cell to cell connections and functions. The ECM also greatly affects several biological phenomena such as development, aging, inflammation, wound healing, and immunity. Glycosaminoglycans (GAG), such as chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid and keratan sulfate, are major components of the ECM and play an important role. Analysis of glycosaminoglycans is very difficult, especially when performing in situ analysis of cells and tissues. Deuteration of Aromatic and Heteroaromatic Compounds Catalyzed by Tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane

Tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane performs as a deuterating catalyst of aromatic and heteroaromatic derivatives with deuterium oxide. For example, Werner et al. have reported (hetero)aromatic derivatives react with deuterium oxide in the presence of tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane as a catalyst to give the corresponding deuterium labeled aryl products in good yields. This reaction, a heavy metal-free reaction, can regioselectively introduce deuterium to aromatic derivatives under mild conditions.
