The Co(II)-Porphyrin-catalyzed Aerobic Oxidative Coupling of Phenols

Guo et al. have reported the Co(II)-porphyrin-catalyzed aerobic oxidative coupling of phenols.  According to their results, the oxidative coupling of various phenols proceeds smoothly with O2 by using [5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-methoxyphenyl)porphyrinato]cobalt(II) as a catalyst producing the corresponding biaryl compounds in high yields.  This reaction is carried out under mild conditions with operational simplicity.  In addition, the obtained biaryl derivatives are important in the area of pharmaceuticals and as ligands in metal catalysis, etc. Thus, broad future applications of this method are expected.

Synthesis of formamide derivatives catalyzed by vitamin B1 hydrochloride

Thiamine hydrochloride hydrate(=VB1), also named vitamin B1 hydrochloride hydrate, has been used as the catalyst of the benzoin condensation due to behavior similar to a cyanide ion.  Recently, it has been shown that VB1 is an efficient catalyst for N-forminations using formic acid as a forminating reagent.  In the reactions, the N-forminations smoothly proceed at 80 °C by the addition of 2 mol% of VB1 to the mixture of formic acid and amines without any solvents.  Various amines such as aromatic and aliphatic amines, and C-protected amino acids can be transformed into the corresponding formamide derivatives.  Typically, conventional synthetic methods using formic acid require high temperature conditions, or expensive condensing reagents or metal salts to accomplish the N-forminations.  Thus, VB1 catalyzed N-formination is an easy and convenient synthetic method to produce formamide derivatives.

I also like snow.  We have small amount of snow in Tokyo in Jan or Feb and I am really waiting for white snow.  When I was a child, we had more snow, all over white landscape.  However, snow is decreasing year by year in Tokyo, maybe due to worldwide warming.. Some like snow, some do not like snow, but I always want to think about Our Big Home – The Earth.
