Beclomethasone Dipropionate: A Prodrug with Weak Glucocorticoid Receptor Binding Affinity

Beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP), a synthetic ant-inflammatory glucocorticoid and corticosteroid, is a prodrug with weak glucocorticoid receptor binding affinity. BDP is hydrolyzed with esterase enzymes to an active metabolite beclomethasone 17-monopropionate and minor inactive metabolites, beclomethasone 21-monopropionate and beclomethasone. BDP is freely soluble in acetone and ethanol, soluble in chloroform, and very slightly soluble in water. BDP is used for treatment of asthma and rhinitis.
