Application

Yasunami-Takase Azulene Synthesis1)

Typical Procedure:
To a solution of 3-(methoxycarbonyl)-2H-cyclohepta[b]furan-2-one (1 mmol) in absolute ethanol, butyraldehyde (3.5 mmol) and morpholine (0.8 mmol) are added. The mixture is refluxed for 8-10 h, then left at room temperature for 12 h under stirring, and finally ethanol is evaporated. The obtained crude material is isolated by flash column chromatography (petroleum ether / AcOEt = 50 : 1) to afford the desired azulene derivative (Y. 90%) as a dark blue oil.
