Riluzole is a neuroprotective agent that blocks glutamatergic neurotransmission in the neuronal synapse. Riluzole would affect neurons by 3 mechanisms: by inhibiting excitatory L-glutamic acid [
G0059] release, inhibiting events following stimulation of excitatory glutamic acid receptors and stabilizing the inactivated state of voltage-dependent sodium channels. Riluzole is mainly used for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) which would be associated with glutamate excitotoxicity. (The product is for research purpose only.)
