Lopinavir: A HIV-1 Protease Inhibitor
Lopinavir (ABT-378), a HIV-1 protease inhibitor, prevents cleavage of the Gag-Pol polyprotein, resulting in the production of immature, non-infectious viral particles.1,2) In clinical, lopinavir is co-formulated with ritonavir [R0116] to enhance the bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of lopinavir.3) Ritonavir inhibits the CYP3A-mediated metabolism of lopinavir, thereby providing increased plasma levels of lopinavir. In the 2020s, it has been reported that lopinavir is an effective agent that inhibits the protease activity of corona viruses, such as SARS-CoV2 and MERS.4,5) (The product is for research purpose only.)
