Mukaiyama et al. have recently reported esterification and amidation reactions using 3-pyridine carboxylic anhydride (1) as a condensing reagent.1) According to the report, approximately equimolar amounts of carboxylic acids and alcohols or amines react to afford the corresponding esters and amides, respectively, in high yields under mild conditions.
