Theophylline: A Bioactive Purine Alkaloid Contained in Tea and Cocoa
Theophylline is a purine alkaloid, is one of the abundant methylxanthine in tea (Camellia sinensis) and cocoa (Theobroma cacao).1) Biological studies have been suggested that theophylline works as an adenosine receptor antagonist,2,3) and a phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitor to increase intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) [A2381].2,3) Theophylline induces relaxation of smooth muscle of the bronchus, and used as a bronchodilator for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
