Experimental procedure: To a solution of 487 mg (3 mmol) of 6-hydroxy-3,4-dihydro-1(2H)-naphthalenone in DMA (4.5 mL) is added 360 mg (9 mmol) of sodium hydroxide. The mixture is stirred at room temperature for 1 hour, 1.494 g (9 mmol) of 2-bromoisobutyramide is added and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 5 hours. After the reaction period, 1.080 g (27 mmol) of sodium hydroxide is added and the resulting mixture is stirred at 50 °C for 1 hour. After the reaction period, 4.5 mL of water is added and the mixture is heated at reflux for 1 hour. Water (9 mL) is added to the solution and cooled slowly to room temperature. The precipitated crystalline powder are collected and washed with 4.5 mL of water three times to give 287 mg (59%) of 6-amino-3,4-dihydro-1(2H)-naphthalenone as off-white crystalline powder.
