Puberulic Acid: A Compound with Distinctive Structure and Biological Activity
Puberulic acid is a tropolone-based natural compound produced by Penicillium sp. and has a unique seven-membered aromatic ring structure. It was previously evaluated for its antiprotozoal activity and studied as a potential antimalarial agent. 1,2,3) Recently, puberulic acid has attracted public attention in Japan due to its suspected involvement in health issues associated with the consumption of certain dietary supplements. This has increased the demand for fundamental research into its toxicity and mechanism of action.
Furthermore, due to its distinctive structure and biological activity, puberulic acid is once again drawing interest in the fields of medicinal chemistry and chemical biology, and is being explored as a novel bioactive molecule. 4)
