Zidovudine (AZT): a Nucleotide Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor (NRTI)
3'-Azido-2',3'-dideoxythymidine (AZT, Zidovudine) is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). It shows activity against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In 1985, AZT was found to inhibit the HIV in vitro (Mitsuya et al.). AZT, after conversion to AZT-5'-triphosphate (AZT-TP) by cellular enzymes, inhibits HIV-reverse transcriptase (HIV-RT).
