Ciclopirox Olamine: An Antifungal Agent with Additional Antibacterial, Anti-Inflammatory and Antitumor Activities
Ciclopirox olamine is a synthetic, broad-spectrum antifungal agent with additional antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and also recently antitumor activities. In vitro studies have suggested that ciclopirox olamine acts by chelation of trivalent cations, such as Fe3+ and Al3+, resulting in the inhibition of the metal-dependent enzymes that are responsible for the cellular metabolism, organization of cell wall structure and other crucial cell functions.1,2) In addition, ciclopirox olamine exerts its anti-inflammatory activity by scavenging the reactive oxygen species (ROS) released from inflammatory cells.2) In 2000s, some studies have reported that ciclopirox olamine could be repositioned as a new antitumor agent.3-5) (The product is for research purpose only.)
