Diazoxide: An ATP-Sensitive Potassium Channel (KATPt Channel) Activator with Multiple Effects
Diazoxide is an ATP-sensitive potassium channel (KATP channel) activator, which causes local relaxation in vascular smooth muscle1,2) and inhibits islet β-cell from secreting insulin.3) Therefore, diazoxide has been used as an antihypertensive agent and as a hyperglycemic agent. Diazoxide also acts as a positive allosteric modulator of α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptors (also known as AMPA receptors) which are major players in mediating basal synaptic transmission and synaptic plasticity in the mammalian CNS.4) In addition, diazoxide affects other ion channels and ATPases, and may directly regulate mitochondrial energetics.5) (The product is for research purpose only.)
