			2',3'-Dideoxyadenosine (ddA): A Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor
		
		2',3'-Dideoxyadenosine (ddA) and didanosine (ddI) [D3066] are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors.  ddA is a synthetic nucleoside analogue of the naturally occurring nucleoside 2’-deoxyadenosine in which the 3'-hydroxyl group is replaced by hydrogen.  Intracellularly, ddA and ddI are converted by cellular enzymes to the active metabolite, ddA- 5'-triphosphate.  The triphosphate inhibits the activity of viral reverse transcriptase both by competing with the natural substrate, 2’-deoxyadenosine-5'-triphosphate, and by its incorporation into viral DNA causing termination of viral DNA chain.
