Application
Ezetimibe: A Potent Inhibitor of Cholesterol Intestinal Absorption
Ezetimibe (SCH 58235) is in a class of lipid-lowering agents that selectively inhibits the intestinal absorption of cholesterol and related phytosterols. It has been reported that ezetimibe reduces the small intestinal enterocyte uptake and absorption of cholesterol by binding to a cholesterol transporter Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) which is involved in the intestinal uptake of cholesterol and phytosterols, and keeps cholesterol in the intestinal lumen for excretion.
