Baclofen: A γ-Amino Butyric Acid Type B (GABAB) Receptor Agonist
Baclofen is a γ-amino butyric acid type B (GABAB) receptor agonist. Baclofen is a muscle relaxant and antispastic, but the precise mechanism of action of baclofen is not fully understood. However, baclofen is a structural analog of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, and may exert its effects by stimulating of the GABAB receptor subtype. Current studies suggest that baclofen may reduce alcohol dependence. Baclofen is a racemic compound, and its active enantiomer is (R)-Baclofen (l-baclofen or STX209) [B5102].
