A solution of 3',4'-dimethoxyacetophenone (5.00 g, 27.7 mmol) in acetic acid (13 mL) was added dropwise to a solution of nitric acid (100 mL) and acetic acid (20 mL) at 0 °C. After stirring for 6 hours, the reaction mixture was poured into iced water (1000 mL) and the crystallized solid was filtered off. The solid was washed with ethanol to afford 1 (3.66 g, 58% yield) as a light yellow powder.
